Shim Yoonok has long explored the nature of art through the metaphor of jewels¡ªobjects that shine on their own, yet also reflect and are transformed by the surfaces around them.

Her works capture forms that are clearly defined and visually captivating, yet hint at underlying narratives that shift when juxtaposed with others. These visual transformations question what remains constant and what changes¡ªan inquiry into how classical, idealized images can be reinterpreted through a contemporary lens.

Rather than focusing on complete silhouettes, Shim often depicts fractured plaster casts of Venus, alongside pearls and jewels that flow along obscure curves viewed from behind. This slightly unfamiliar perspective expands the medium, giving concrete form to the artist¡¯s visual interpretation. She incorporates metal fabric¡ªnot as something to be drawn, but as a multidimensional backdrop still shimmering with opulence¡ªto create new sculptural __EXPRESSION__s. By situating such luxurious objects in marginal positions, she constructs contexts that render the objects and their imagery alien, provoking reflection on their socio-cultural meanings. In doing so, her work raises fundamental questions: What defines our perception of beauty?

Yet, at its core, Shim¡¯s practice is rooted in the belief that aesthetic experience begins with the visual specificity of objects. In her object-based works, she builds immersive environments that allow images and their surroundings to interact in spatial and perceptual ways. To this end, she employs a range of visual strategies: for instance, transparent acrylic structures¡ªspecially designed to act as both supports and frames¡ªfeature undulating surfaces on the outer layers, producing a continuously shifting visual experience depending on the viewer¡¯s perspective. Light refracted from the jewels flows unpredictably, creating a sense of mystery. Meanwhile, metallic elements in the backgrounds or supports enhance this spectacle of brilliance, their curves echoing the acrylic surface and adding to the ambiguity of the overall scene.

Through these gestures, Shim creates a kind of meta-space¡ªone where interactions are reversed, existing perceptual assumptions are disrupted, and new visual conditions emerge. Her inquiry begins with the painterly nature of light and expands into material investigations, focusing on moments of intersection where mediating elements interact and trigger new forms of perception.

In the Lichtung: Ecstatic Open World series, which continues alongside her drawing practice, this exploration of aesthetic perception culminates in sculptural works rather than traditional depictions. The recurring motif of the jewel¡ªnow scattered, refracted, and interfered with¡ªheightens imaginative possibilities. Within this ever-shifting landscape of appearances, Shim presents phenomena that resist fixation. Things we once found beautifully illusory or strangely familiar now unfold in new ways.

At the heart of her practice lies a fundamental engagement with structure and its entanglement in relationships. Her works unravel these dynamics in their own distinctive manner. The meaning of art, for Shim, is to hold past perspectives while re-seeing them through the lens of the present. It is this constant act of transformation and return that defines her evolving practice.
